Career Training Development offers a number of opportunities for professional development for career specialists, career counselors, job center staff, educators, and others interested in education and work issues.
Summer Institute
This annual summer event provides expert training and networking opportunities for career development facilitators, career counselors, career specialists, advisors, coaches, and virtually anyone involved in career development and workforce readiness.
The agenda provides ample time for formal and informal networking with instructors and participants. Whether you serve as a K-12 educator, a higher education professional, or as a professional in the community, these Institutes will provide ideas for working with students and clients on a wide variety of issues. In addition, by attending, you can receive professional development hours that will count towards the renewal of your certifications. We will be delivering all Institutes remotely. We will send video conferencing information at a later date.
Summer Institute: July 14-15, 2022
Institute # 1. Demystifying Career and Labor Market Information in 2022 July 14th 9:00-Noon (CST)
During this Institute, presenters will update your knowledge about career and labor market information and resources. Time will be set aside for discussions and activities that will improve your ability to determine the validity and reliability of LMI information. Specific topics include:
- Labor market trends and projections
- The impact of the pandemic on the data used in those projections
- Resources for 2022
- Information literacy to assist the professional and the student/client
- Clarification of our ethical code as it relates to career and labor market information
- Review of copyright laws associated with this information.
Institute #2. Understanding the Nuances of the Job Search in 2022 July 14th 1:00-4:00 (CST)
Most of us are familiar with the typical questions asked during a first and second (and sometimes third) job interview. As we look into this topic more deeply, we can see that in 2022 strategies are being used by employers that are not as familiar. As example, students and clients are now encountering and interfacing with Applicant Tracking Systems and Artificial Intelligence is filtering through job applicants. During this Institute, you will hear how these systems are being used with a particular focus on how we can prepare our students/clients to excel during these types of recruiting strategies.
Topics include:
- The Use of Artificial Intelligence and Applicant Tracking Systems in 2022
- Ways that We Can Coach Applicants
- Using Tiktok to Enhance an Application
- Continuing Concerns About Sharing Mental Health Concerns During a Job Interview
Institute #3. Mentees, Mentors, and Mentoring: Strategies for Career Success July 15th 9:00-Noon (CST)
Mentoring programs have been with us for decades but interest in them waxes and wanes. During this Institute, we will study this strategy more closely by examining the following topics:
- What makes for a good mentoring relationship?
- What doesn’t work in mentoring?
- Case Studies that highlight the challenges and strengths of mentoring programs
- A Mentoring Curriculum developed by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experience in Research (CIMER) at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
- Links to additional publications and resources
Institute #4. Career Discussions with a Nod to our Artistic and Creative Sides July 15th 1:00-4:00 (CST)
Career decision-making has often been thought of as a linear and rational process rather than one that comes from our artistic and creative sides. During this Institute, participants will have the opportunity to increase knowledge and skills related to strategies that tap into that artistic side. They include but are not limited to:
- Meaning That Comes with Metaphors
- Poetry and Creative Life Timeline
- Vision Boards
- Padlets and Jam Boards
- Journaling
- Theatrical Rehearsals
- The Use of Paradoxes
- Taking Stock with a Visual Tool
Professional Development Hours
The Institutes have been approved by the Center on Credentialing &Education (CCE) for Professional Development Hours. Depending on how many Institutes you attend, you could obtain from 3-12 hours. The National Career Development Association (NCDA) has also approved the Institutes for Professional Development Hours. The University of Wisconsin has approved Continuing Education Units (CEU’s). You can obtain 3-12 hours depending on which Institutes you attend.
